Hey Loves!!!! I know it’s been a while since I posted anything but after watching the 3rd Annual Black Girls Rock, I knew I had to say something to you all out there about how great it was. The show aired last night (Sunday November 4th) at 7/6 central on BET. The BEAUTIFUL Regina King and GORGEOUS Tracee Ellis Ross were hosts again this year. Black Girls Rock is a show that celebrates the brilliance and beauty of Black Women. BET describes it as a “Historic and monumental show highlighting the accomplishments of exceptional women of color who have made outstanding contributions in their careers, and who stand as inspirational and positive role models in their communities” AND I COULDN’T AGREE MORE!!! The event/show stems from Black Girls Rock! Inc which is a non-profit youth empowerment and mentoring organization founded by Power Woman, Beverly Bond. The organization was established to promote the arts for young women of color, as well as to encourage dialogue and analysis of the ways women of color are portrayed in the media. The show that aired last night was only a part of Beverly’s larger mission to remind young girls and all of us that the sky’s the limit and we can do anything that we set our minds to. This year’s honorees were: Alicia Keys, Kerry Washington, Janelle Monae, Dr. Hawa Abdi, Dionne Warwick and Susan Taylor and the presenters and performers included: Ciara and Missy Elliot, Gabrielle Union, and Eva Longoria just to name a few… It was truly a phenomenal and inspiring show. If you missed it I suggest you look up when it’s airing again and watch it!!! (It’s on BET, so you know they will be showing it at least once a week for the next month, LOL)

August is here which means summer is winding down and sooner or later we all will be back in the busy grind that comes along with the fall and winter months. The legendary Twitter Party 4 is back hosted by D.J. Taber and Nate Jackson along with the new clothing brand Fame Park. It is also the same night as the Nicki Minaj and 2 Chainz show at Paramont theatre, so you know the city will already be active! 

Ladies We Have To Do Better, Will All The Real Women Please Stand Up!!!

Today I saw this photo of the cover for the June issue of Vibe magazine. In the photo is R&B singer turned reality TV star Kandi Burrus, and other reality TV. stars Tamar Braxton, Evelyn Lozada, and Chrissy Lampkin with the title being "Meet Your New Role Models". Now, when I initially saw this I thought, "That’s a cute picture of them all" but when I scrolled down to read the caption I immediately became upset. With the exception of Kandi, I'm not sure if I feel comfortable calling any of these women role models. What are they really teaching/showing young girls to aspire to be? To be loud women that refuse to use standard and proper English language and diction. Maybe that it's ok to fight over every word used against you, or that you should be tossed around by pro-athletes, singers, rappers, actors, or any other male with a higher social status in hopes to gain fame and validation in an industry that only notices you for what you hold between your two legs rather than your two ears. It's sad to say but this in no way, shape, form, or fashion should be the influence and personification that any girl, young or old should look up to. It's disappointing to know what these women would subject themselves to and be proud to air it all on national television. Don’t get me wrong, I like all these women for entertainment purposes but do I feel they should hold influence on what should or should not be to other women and girls, no!

All of these women with the exception of Kandi became "famous" and "well known" for riding the coat tails of someone else who actually made it by their own doing.  Tamar has her sister Toni and her husband to thank for her relevance, Evelyn has Chad and every other industry dude that she has been connected to, and Chrissy has Jim Jones and the major crime lords she was with prior to her and Jim's relationship. Kandi on the other hand is the only one who has made her name off her own work ethic and hustle. With all of that being said, I'm sorry but I think I’m better off finding some other role models and I think you should do the same.
